Clara J's Tea Room Information

Tucked into the historic streets of Maumee, Ohio, Clara J's Tea Room at 219 W Wayne St offers a charming, almost storybook-like escape from the usual dining scene. Walking in, the first thing that stands out is the cozy, vintage-inspired atmosphere-lace curtains, delicate china, and soft lighting that instantly sets a relaxed, intimate tone. It feels less like a typical restaurant and more like stepping into someone’s carefully curated home, which adds a personal touch you don’t often find.

The menu leans heavily into traditional tea room fare, and that’s where this place really shines. Their selection of loose-leaf teas is thoughtfully curated, with options ranging from classic Earl Grey to more fragrant herbal blends. Pairing a pot of tea with their freshly made scones is practically a must. The scones arrive warm, slightly crumbly on the outside, and soft inside, served with clotted cream and jam that balance sweetness without being overwhelming. It’s the kind of detail that reflects a kitchen paying attention to authenticity rather than rushing out generic dishes.

Beyond tea service, the menu includes light lunch options like quiches, finger sandwiches, and seasonal salads. The quiche, in particular, tends to stand out-rich, well-seasoned, and served with a side that complements rather than distracts. Portions are modest but appropriate for the concept, focusing more on quality and presentation than quantity. If you’re expecting a heavy meal, this might not be the place, but for a relaxed afternoon dining experience, it hits the mark.

Service here plays a big role in shaping the overall experience. Staff members are attentive without being intrusive, often taking the time to explain tea pairings or recommend menu favorites based on your preferences. It creates a welcoming environment, especially for first-time visitors who may not be familiar with tea room etiquette. Reviews from regulars often mention the consistency of service, which adds to the restaurant’s reputation as a reliable local favorite.

The location itself, right in downtown Maumee, makes it an easy stop whether you’re exploring nearby shops or just looking for a quiet place to unwind. Parking can be a bit limited during busy hours, but that’s fairly typical for the area and doesn’t detract much from the overall visit.

What stands out most is how intentional everything feels-from the presentation of the food to the pacing of the meal. It’s clear that Clara J’s isn’t trying to compete with modern, fast-paced dining trends but instead offers something slower and more deliberate. That alone makes it worth experiencing, especially if you appreciate places where atmosphere and attention to detail matter just as much as what’s on the plate.

What People's Say About Place

Proper tea or off menu options for everyone from kids up! I love the cozy atmosphere and the GF proper tea is worth it. Small group, have a party. They can do it all. Very kind and accommodating. We go several times a year.

Had my daughter’s bridal shower here. To say it was the easiest and nicest shower is an understatement. Everything was included and they had great fun food and service. Would do it again in a heart beat. I had another bridal shower for my daughter in law and we went somewhere else…..way more expensive and not nearly as nice. Highly recommend

My friends and I had a lovely lunch here. The food, service, ambiance -- all, were delightful.

Very nice little hidden gem in maumee. Today was my first time here and I was blown away. It was a very cozy and welcoming atmosphere and the several teas I bought smell amazing!! Ill definitely be back!!

Lovely place to have a relaxing lunch. The menu offers unique foods that you won’t find elsewhere. I had Clara J’s Ribbon sandwich and my husband had the crab melt. The meals came with chips, a fabulous salad and fresh fruit. I had the Valentine Tea that was so good that I bought a box in the gift shop to take home. The shop had a nice selection of Harney & Sons teas along with other tea and honey items. They also had the nicest selections of desserts, we couldn’t resist so we had one too!

A lovely, charming tea house with a great variety of teas as well as a delicious menu. The Afternoon tea is comparable to those I’ve had in the UK. The food presentation is gorgeous and the food has been great each time I’ve been there. The little shop in the tea house has some of those great teas to purchase as well as some other charming tea items. The service has always been really good with friendly service. My only complaint is not enough Devonshire Cream with the scones (it could be worse!). All in all, it’s a great place to dress up in flowery clothes and drink tea with friends.

My friend took me here as a surprise, and I am SO GLAD she did! Tucked away on a residential street in Maumee, this house-turned-brunch-nook is an absolute gem. The decor is worthy Food Network meeting Antiques Roadshow, and comes complete with a gift shop. Although they have utilized their space as well as possible, space is still limited and I'd recommend a reservation, especially because of their short hours. Believe it or not, I a not much of a tea drinker. I have very specific tastes and tolerances. I found a creamy Oolong on the menu that fit the bill, and the pot was only $4, to my surprise. The menu seems to have a good variety from around the world, so if you have something specific in mind, take hte chance and see if it's on their menu, if not in their seasonal stock. Their lunch menu is also seasonal, and made with totally fresh ingredients, almost all locally sourced. Their desserts come in bite or two-bite sizes, so you never need to feel overfull and can still enjoy just a bite of a sweat treat after your meal - or try a few different items, if you're interested. Personnally, the blondie bottomed, lavender-topped homemade cheescake took me to another planet of flavor, but like I said with the teas: shop around and you can't go wrong. I ordered tea, a quiche, and two desserts, and came away for about $25. For the quality of the food, freshness, and knowledgeable, prompt, and friendly service, I think this is well worth it. Since street parking in the nieghborhood is free, taking a little after brunch repast and walk through an absolutely lovely suburb is just the thing to cap off the lovely brunch experience you will have at Clara J's Tea Room.

The staff and food were superb today at the bridal shower I hosted at Clara J's! They are fantastic to work with and pay attention to every little detail including dietary restrictions and decor! Highly recommend for showers, small parties or just lunch! Thank you so much for the amazing experience!
